Safe-to-spend calculator Tool 01

What can you safely spend today?

Your bank balance knows what is there now. It does not remember the debit order on Thursday. Add the money still coming in and going out; the calculator finds the lowest point before the next payday.

Your balance is not your spending money

A balance is a photograph. A month is a film. Safe to spend starts with the lowest balance your account reaches after the events you already know about. If that point is below zero, the safe amount is R0 and the tool flags the shortfall.

Suppose there is R4 800 in your account. It feels like R4 800 is available. But rent, a phone debit order and payday are all waiting in different places on the calendar. The order matters: a payment can bounce on Tuesday even if the month ends comfortably on Friday.

    How the calculation works

    1. Start with your current balance.
    2. Add every expected payment and receipt in date order.
    3. Keep a running balance after each event.
    4. Find the lowest running balance. If it is positive, that is the most you can remove today without pushing the known timeline below zero. If it is negative, there is already a shortfall and the safe-to-spend amount is R0.

    A worked example

    EventChangeRunning balance
    Balance todayR4 800R4 800
    Rent−R3 200R1 600
    Phone debit order−R450R1 150
    Payday+R8 500R9 650

The lowest projected balance is R1 150, so that is the safe-to-spend amount before adding a buffer. Spending R1 500 today would leave the phone debit order R350 short, even though payday later repairs the month-end balance.

    What belongs on the timeline?

Add debit orders, rent, subscriptions, debt repayments, transfers to savings, planned groceries and income you reasonably expect. Pending card payments belong here too if your displayed bank balance has not included them yet.

Expected income deserves more caution than a debit order. If a freelance payment is often late, leave it out until it arrives or move it to the latest realistic date. A cautious answer is more useful than an optimistic one.

    What the number cannot know

    • It cannot see forgotten bills, bank fees or payments that have not appeared yet.
    • It assumes every amount and date you enter is correct.
    • It does not reserve an emergency buffer unless you add one as an outgoing event.
    • It is a short-term cash-flow check, not a complete monthly budget.

    Leave yourself some runway

“Safe” here means the known list stays at or above zero. Real life adds surprises. Add a final event called buffer if you want the calculator to protect an amount you refuse to spend.
